According to NRC.......

Scientific inquiry refers to the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence derived from their work. Inquiry also refers to the activities of students in which they develop knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, as well as an understanding of how scientists study the natural world.

  • “Understanding and doing inquiry are contingent upon knowing concepts, principles, laws, and theories of physical, life and earth sciences”
  • Inquiry includes using data and investigations to critically think about the relationships between evidence and explanations and communication scientific arguments.
  • Inquiry is a multi-faceted activity involving:
    • Making observations
    • Posing questions
    • Examining books & materials to what is already known
    • Using tools to gather, analyze, interpret data
    • Propose Questions, explanation and predictions
    • Communicate Results
  • Requires use of critical and logical thinking and consideration to alternative explanations.

Students will:
  • Identify questions & concepts that guide a scientific investigation
  • Design and conduct a scientific investigation
  • Use technology & mathematics to improve investigations and communications
  • Formulate & revise scientific explanations and models using logic and evidence
  • Recognize and analyze alternative explanations and models
  • Communicate and defend a scientific argument
